PayJunction is seeking a site reliability engineer to support the infrastructure and services that make PayJunction the leading developer of paperless payment software. As a valued member of our small but mighty engineering team, you will ensure our systems are healthy, automated and secure. Our site reliability engineer will help design, build, maintain and enhance our Level 1 PCI security standard. This position is key to our long-term growth, and this person will work closely with our founders.

The site reliability engineer will learn our unique stack, identify areas for improvement, bring a big picture vision, make recommendations and implement solutions.  The ideal candidate for this role eats, breathes and sleeps automation, always has security in mind, and can implement best practices to further our mission. Formal education in computer science or related field allows the site reliability engineer to apply coding principles and best practices to PayJunction's systems, infrastructure and automation initiatives, embodying an 'infrastructure as code' approach. We are looking for a Puppet expert to take our automation initiatives to the next level. We take testing seriously, and believe in an effective and efficient engineering approach that reduces bugs and stress.

This is a full-time, in-house position in our Santa Barbara office. Due to COVID-19, our office is currently working remotely until further notice. This means you can expect some initial temporary remote working until we transition teams back to office.

Areas of Focus

  • Reliability

    • Monitoring - site reliability and health

    • Alerting - critical problems and errors

    • Metrics - gathering data for troubleshooting of all kinds

  • Development

    • Deploying new tools to support our systems and services in an automated fashion

    • Hardening our systems where applicable

    • Supporting the deployment of new product services

Basic Knowledge:

  • Server Administration Tools:

    • Linux administration

    • Backup strategies

  • Coding (experience coding in at least one of the following languages):

    • Python

    • Ruby

    • Java

Ideal candidates will have the following experience and traits:

  • Outstanding Puppet and Ansible skills and a fundamental desire to automate everything

  • Comfortable using monitoring and alerting tools like Splunk, Nagios, and Prometheus

  • Background in programming and strong coding skills (i.e. desire and ability to write quality code)

  • Direct experience maintaining PCI Compliance

  • Good understanding of how network fundamentals (packet captures and tracing are a plus)

  • Ability to triage

  • Strong coding skills

  • Security-minded outlook

  • Strong sense of responsibility and ownership
